Review

Books Aren’t for Bears is a charming picture book about a bear who discovers a love of reading. His journey leads him into the city where he seeks more books, but he is told “books aren’t for bears.”

The illustrations are a delight, and add a few surprises to the story. But what I most loved was the ending. It shares a message of the value libraries bring to their community, a place where “books are for everyone.”

This charming read-aloud is highly recommended to anyone who loves reading and their local library.

Storyline

When Bear finds a book in the woods, his world is changed. His friend Owl teaches him to read, and Bear wants more! Bear decides the city will offer him what he’s looking for, but when he reaches the busy streets, he’s sad to discover that some people think that “Books aren’t for bears!” Can Bear find a place where books are for everybody?

  1. This sounds like a delightful read, K.A., and I appreciate you bringing it to my attention! Books about books and animal protagonists make for a winning combination. Thanks so much for the wonderful post, and have a great week!

  2. Oh my, I do love bear books & this looks so cute! I shared a book today that would make a great pairing, A Book for Bear! It’s for young readers, too! I’m so glad you shared!

  3. This book reminds me of one in my stack about a bear who wants a book of his own and is determined to get one. This one is new to me so I’ll have to check it out. I love books that celebrate books and reading.
